Sequel to 'Journey to the Center of the Earth', Michael Caine Journeys to 'Mysterious Island'

File this one under not sure we needed this sequel. The film in question is Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the sequel will be Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will replace Brendan Fraser, to team up with the returning Josh Hutcherson. Also joining the cast will be Michael Caine, who will play Hutcherson's grandfather. Johnson and Hutcherson must travel to this, wait for it, mysterious island to rescue Caine. But don't expect Caine to just lounge around or have a mere cameo appearance; the 77-year-old actor will be involved in a few different action scenes.

The 3-D adventure film will be directed by Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore), and will be loosely based on the 1874 Jules Verne novel Mysterious Island. Production will begin in late October in Hawaii and North Carolina. They hope to have it released September 23, 2011.
