Nurse in Iconic WWII War's End Photo Dies



The nurse who appeared in the famous photograph Kissing the War Goodbye, or War's End Kiss, has passed away at the age of 91. The iconic photo, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, shows a sailor kissing a nurse in New York City's Times Square to celebrate V-J Day and the end of World War II. The image first becamse famous after it was published in Life magazine.

The identity of the nurse was unknown until the late 1970s, when Edith Shain wrote to the photographer, identifying herself as the white-clad nurse. The identity of the sailor is still under dispute and unresolved.

Shain died at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday, and leaves behind three sons, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
