David Fincher to Direct '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'

David Fincher is in negotiations with Disney to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Bourne Ultimatum screenwriter Scott Z. Burns is set to write the script. This new 20,000 Leagues is going to be a modern update of the 1954 Kirk Douglas version, and would be based, of course, on the classic story by Jules Verne, first published in 1869.

Originally Disney was working with McG to direct the film, but they scrapped the whole project when they weren't happy with the direction the movie was taking. Fincher is a filmmaker best known for movies such as Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This new take on Captain Nemo is being described as in the vein of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, and aims to be "visually dazzling".

One noteworthy item: Disney ditched the McG version in part because it was "too dark", yet they choose to go with the often dark Fincher. It should be interesting to see how this project develops.
